In honor of Black History Month, we proudly spotlight the Black pioneers, business owners, and community leaders whose vision, resilience, and dedication have helped shape the Coachella Valley into the vibrant community it is today. Through this series, we celebrate the lasting impact of their contributions, recognize their achievements, and uplift the stories that continue to inspire future generations.

Charles Bowens visited Indio in 1928 & later moved in 1938. He married Idolphus Hinchen and they had one daughter, two granddaughters & five great grandchildren. He worked at Miles Avenue Park until he was drafted in to the Army in 1940. He was the first African American in Indio to be drafted. He is a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign War. He served one year as Commander & another year as Chaplin.

Robert Brigg Chappell was born in Louisiana, April 2, 1896. He moved to Indio, California in 1940 and married Perneatha Wallace and was blessed with three children: Sam, Whallin & Robbie. A WWI veteran and also one of the founders & organizers of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He donated the land for the church to be built. In 1956 he helped build the first over-pass which is called the Jefferson Bridge in Indio, California.

Herbert King moved to Indio, California November 19, 1939. He married Alberta & worked as a ranch foreman. He was the first person to purchase a lot on the Nairobi track. He was known as Daddy King in the Community because of his Godly wisdom, understanding and advice.
