In honor of Black History Month, we proudly spotlight the Black pioneers, business owners, and community leaders whose vision, resilience, and dedication have helped shape the Coachella Valley into the vibrant community it is today. Through this series, we celebrate the lasting impact of their contributions, recognize their achievements, and uplift the stories that continue to inspire future generations.

Ronald Tollette, Sr. moved to Indio, California 1947 from Phoenix, Arizona. He married Fannie Mae & to this union four children were born: Ronald, Stephen, Cynthia & Loryetta. He was a master carpenter and the first black to be on the Indio City’s Planning Commission.

John Nobles, a share cropper moved from Oklahoma with his family to Indio, California 1922. They lived on the Indian Reservation which was located across the railroad track off of East Hwy 99. Mr. Nobles later bought property from Mr. Miller who owned 165 acres of homestead property and later became known as John Nobles Ranch. He built his family a house and dug a well for water. He also planted cotton, peanuts & lettuce. He raised chicken, hogs & pigeons.
